Last week’s shootings (Mr. Sterling, Mr. Castile, and the police officers in Dallas) are a poignant reminder that our world is being divided by fear before our very eyes. As the Church, we get to share a Love that drives out this fear threatening to rip us apart.
Fear is the Problem
We need to be willing to confront fear in the face with love. Perfect love from our heavenly father is the only thing that will change things. No government can legislate it, no protest can stop it, no speech can bring it. Only the overwhelming love of Jesus can change a heart. We have the opportunity to demonstrate love to others by listening, caring, sharing, and developing a relationships with them.
We have the opportunity to set a new paradigm, a new standard, a new way, the way of love is the best way. But this love we have been given is not a safe, sanitary love that is protected from all harm. I want us to pray for all those victims, families, friends and our country to seek God’s face and show His love to others.
Things just might change when we get serious about showing the love of Christ to others. When was the last time you had a conversation with someone of a different ethnicity? You might be surprise by what they say if you will just listen. It breaks my heart that African American men in my church have fear because of what they have seen and the way they have been treated in the past. Love is the only way to defeat fear. Let’s show and share the love of Christ everywhere we go.
